This small oil painting conveys the general story of the several other versions of the scene in watercolor (CR#s 368, 368A, and 368B). Its provenance is insufficient to tell us for whom it was painted. Like the others, it pictures two of Stewart’s hunters, probably Antoine and Pierre, sneaking up on a herd of buffalo. Its medium and the snow-capped mountains in the distance, however, distinguish this from the other versions.
