Hunting the Buffalo

At the Apollo Gallery in New York City in May, 1839, Miller exhibited two large paintings titled Hunting the Buffalo. This is one of those works. It was completed for ultimate shipment to Scotland where it would be hung at Stewart’s Murthly Castle. The critics who visited the exhibition claimed the two hunt scenes as remarkable, “nearly equal to anything we ever saw.” They were especially noteworthy for the “spirit and vivacity of the figures,” and though the coloring was considered good, the “drawing and perspective” were regarded as “very fine.” (Ross, XXIII)
