In this much more finished version of a female chasing a bison, Miller has flipped the perspective and limned the details of the bison herd and the mountains in the distance. This was part of William T. Walters order of two hundred watercolor paintings that Miller received in 1858. He began work in July 1858, and finished in August 1860. The colors in the set are still fresh and bright because Walters kept them in portfolios and rarely exposed them to light. (Ross, 1968, p. xxviii, plate 90)
